What Is Convert To Apfs

Apple File System (APFS) is a file system for Mac computers with MacOS 10.13 or later, it is optimized for flash storage drives and solid-state drives, however it is compatible with hard drives. That drive did convert successfully. My primary drive however failed to convert and while in recovery mode, did not want to bless as startup disk. Rebooting however brought my system back up as normal for my primary system. I know early on, APFS was not available for Mac Pro 5,1 which I believe is my model.

Neither of the 3 systems (2 Mac Mini late-2012 with 1TB Fusion Drives - one encyrypted with Filevault, one NOT, 1 2017 iMac with all-SSD) had the 'convert to APFS' option showing when I installed 10.13 beta 5 (from 10.12.6).

Convert To Apfs Failed

Once the upgrade finished, going to Disk Utiliy (booting to recovery console) shows the 'convert to APFS' options greyred out on all (regardless of mounted or unmounted).

  • This site has instructions on how to convert your drive to APFS. Restart the Mac into Recovery Mode. Launch Disk utility. Click-select your named boot volume. (Not the physical drive above it.) In the Disk Utility Edit menu, select 'Convert to APFS; More detailed instructions are given in the link above.
  • Wait a few minutes until the conversion process is finished and a green check mark will appear. Click the Done button. That's it, you're done. Now the hard drive is formatted in the APFS, which we can verify by the inscription 'APFS Volume APFS' instead of 'USB External Physical Volume Mac OS Extended (Journaled.
  • Advantages of Converting to APFS. APFS offers a ton of benefits that you don't find in HFS+. Moreover, it is also the recommended file system for SSDs and flash drives. The following are some of the advantages that you can avail of by converting to APFS. Fast Duplication and Copying: APFS is a lot faster than HFS+. It can copy and duplicate.

I have also upgraded a VM - which showed the 'convert' option just fine!

Any ideas or suggestions would be highly apprecaited 🙂 Am I missing somethign? APFS should install fine on these boot volumes from what I can tell.

hello
guys! So I Just upgraded my old Mid-2010 White Unibody MacBook with 8GB RAM and a 500GB SSD.
I installed a new copy of Mac OS High sierra and enabled TRIM.
Also I tried to startup in recovery mode to be able to convert the drive's format from Mac OS extended Journaled to APFS but the option appears to be dimmed and cannot select it. I read that this operat
ion is always possible as long as you're using an SSD.
Does anyone know if I'm doing something wrong here?
Your help will be pretty much appreciated!
J
